Evolution of prokaryotic gene order: genome rearrangements in closely related species.

چکیده
Conservation of gene order in prokaryotes has become important in predicting protein function because, over the evolutionary timescale, genomes are shuffled so that local gene-order conservation reflects the functional constraints within the protein. Here, we compare closely related genomes to identify the rate with which gene order is disrupted and to infer the genes involved in the genome rearrangement.

Loss of Chloroplast trnLUAA Intron in Two Species of Hedysarum (Fabaceae): Evolutionary Implications
Previous studies have indicated that in all land plants examined to date, the chloroplast gene trnLUAA isinterrupted by a single group I intron ranging from 250 to over 1400 bp. The parasitic Epifagus virginiana haslost, however, the entire gene. We report that the intron is missing from the chloroplast genome of twoarctic species of the legume genus Hedysarum (H. alpinum, H. ...

Comparative gene mapping is based on the observation that genes that are closely linked in one species tend to be closely linked in other species, whereas loosely linked genes in one species tend to be unlinked in related species. In the absence of chromosome rearrangements, linkages and gene order are preserved. During evolution, chromosome rearrangements invariably occur, disrupting some, but...
متن کاملA hotspot of gene order rearrangement by tandem duplication and random loss in the vertebrate mitochondrial genome.
Most reported examples of change in vertebrate mitochondrial (mt) gene order could be explained by a tandem duplication followed by random loss of redundant genes (tandem duplication-random loss [TDRL] model). Under this model of evolution, independent loss of genes arising from a single duplication in an ancestral species are predicted, and remnant pseudogenes expected, intermediate states tha...
متن کاملEvolution of gene order in the genomes of two related yeast species.
Changes in gene order between the genomes of two related yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces bayanus var. uvarum were studied. From the dataset of a previous low coverage sequencing of the S. bayanus var. uvarum genome, 35 different synteny breakpoints between neighboring genes and two cases of local gene inversion were characterized in detail. The number and the type of t...
متن کاملUniversal Pacemaker of Genome Evolution in Animals and Fungi and Variation of Evolutionary Rates in Diverse Organisms
Gene evolution is traditionally considered within the framework of the molecular clock (MC) model whereby each gene is characterized by an approximately constant rate of evolution. Recent comparative analysis of numerous phylogenies of prokaryotic genes has shown that a different model of evolution, denoted the Universal PaceMaker (UPM), which postulates conservation of relative, rather than ab...
